In My Life, I’ve Tried To Be…

A POEM By Bob Shepherd

At my auntie’s house (she lived in Perthshire), a wee breather away from growing up in Lochee, Dundee, Scotland…1950s.

In my life I’ve tried to be brave

To no one ever will I be a slave

That included my past military time

My thoughts and actions will always be mine

In my life I’ve tried to be wise

The gutless and the grovelers I would always despise

The world is tough and you have to get it

I’ve lived my life unapologetic

In my life I’ve tried to be honest and kind

To those around me in this world that I find

But a lifetime has taught me, there’s a hand out to shake

While the other stabs my back…the first was a fake

In my life I’ve tried to be strong

But there’s no such thing, to be it always is plain wrong

In my life we all have cracks

And when we meet it, it really shocks and smacks

In my life I have been fragile and broken

So before my life ends, I have been open and spoken

In my life to reach a century would be great

And if I don’t, I would have already met my fate

  1. Trying to do your best is all that can ever be expected Bob. We may not always achieve that but, when you do hit that century, I promise to do my best to send you a card! 😊
