BROKEN SOLDIERS A Poem By Bob Shepherd

I rave I rave I rave

Awaiting another unnecessary grave

While broken minds are merely suppressed

By given medication to sit quietly in a corner…at best

The soldier deserves much more

After fighting while leaving our shore

The end of 2023 is now very near

But in the new, nothing will change I fear

Who cares about our broken soldiers today?

While their families and mates try everything, and some pray

The government promises are nothing but noise

While the broken soldier sits quietly without a voice

Disgrace on those who lead

Empty promises passed down for us all to feed

It’s time for the truth to be told

So one more broken soldier doesn’t give up and fold

For years now I’ve tried to tell their story

To make them better and not for their glory

Tomorrow night I’ll stand in the garden and cry

Like every new year’s eve, I don’t want them to die

Those politicians in suits, and those generals with titles in front of your name

Enjoy your Hogmanay party as you stand there in shame
