With my Welsh mate “Taff” in Cardiff a few moons ago.
6 Nations Rugby is upon us once again beginning tomorrow night with France v Ireland.
On Saturday, Italy play England, and later the same day Wales play Scotland.
Like every year, there really is no calling the winner, Grand Slam or otherwise. World Cup over, players retiring, injuries from club rugby, and of course the chance for those youngsters gaining their first cap to rise up and shine.
Cardiff, Wales is my favourite venue, even over my own home venue of Scotland.
The Welsh are extremely hospitable, great humour, amazing range of awesome singing…and in my view the best by far anthem. They are the only supporters who I’ve seen singing the oppositions anthem before their own at home too.
With that I’ve spent time learning some of the words of their funny made up language to feel like I’m paying back for them singing along to Flower of Scotland.
A Welshman years ago admitted to me after a few Guinness’s that two mid Wales sheep farmers in a pub decided that they no longer wished to speak English. So they came up with Welsh, and it spread quicker than a fire in an Englishman’s cottage in Wales. Before we all knew it, Welsh was so popular that even members of the Royal Family were speaking it.
Anyway, back to rugby.
I just want to wish everyone involved in this year’s 6 Nations, all the very best, and may the best team win.
Can’t wait!
Its not so long ago we fretted about competing with Italy for The Wooden Spoon , now we fret only about no being able to beat Ireland ! In Finn we trust ….
