Argentine aircraft attacking British shipping in 1982.
As we’re about to recognize the 40 year anniversary of the Falklands War this year, I just want to recount a moment of absolute “squaddy dry humour” when we were attacked by Argentine aircraft while on deck of one of the ships in the Falklands War.
Myself and a mate called Tommy were taking a bit of time on deck to get some fresh air. We were chatting about an operation that we were about to embark on.
Suddenly one of the crew starts shouting out “Mirage Mirage!”
An Argentine Mirage aircraft screams past us dropping bombs close to the ship.
Tommy looks at me poker faced and says…”it looks real to me.”
The look on the crew members face said it all…nice one Tommy. The next 20 minutes was just about everyone taking a pop at any Argentine aircraft, no matter how near or far from where we were standing…humour in war must always continue…it’s what helps us to keep going.
Brilliant, just brilliant!
Great to read Bob, can’t beat the humour of a British Squaddie. Sometimes at the most inappropriate moment, which makes it even funnier.
Thats hilarious and it shows the base bravery that has always seen the British forces out of the other side of conflict victorious…brilliant
Nice one Tommy
Class insight to what you’re mates were like ,if a normal person was on a ship and a jet dropped a bomb 💣 we would shit ourselves, but you and your mate ,just said ,I think this is real. How can your training keep yous so calm .heros or nutters. But we need people like yous to keep us safe
